What Is Periodontal Maintenance?

July 31, 2023 10:02 am

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is characterized by gums that are irritated and/or infected due to a buildup of bad bacteria, called plaque. The gums become abnormally red, swollen and puffy, and tender. They are also prone to bleeding.

At Coho Dental, our team will always keep an eye out for developments of periodontal disease and recommend periodontal maintenance as needed. Periodontal maintenance refers to the ongoing professional care and preventive measures taken to manage gum disease and maintain the health of the gums and supporting structures. It is typically recommended for patients who have been diagnosed with periodontitis, which is gum disease that has progressed past mild inflammation called gingivitis. Periodontal maintenance plays a crucial role in controlling the progression of gum disease so you don’t experience permanent tissue loss.

Periodontal Therapy at the Dentist

During a periodontal maintenance visit, one of our dental hygienists will perform a thorough examination and cleaning of your gums and teeth. They will measure the depth of periodontal pockets, remove plaque and tartar buildup, and polish your teeth to remove surface stains.

Periodontal maintenance visits are typically scheduled every three to four months, although the frequency can vary based on individual needs. The frequency of visits allows your dental team to closely monitor your gum health, track any changes, identify any signs of disease recurrence or progression, and provide guidance and timely intervention.

At-Home Gum Care

While periodontal maintenance at the dentist is highly effective in fighting gum disease, maintaining good oral hygiene at home is vital. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time with a soft-bristled toothbrush, using dental floss and/or a water flosser to clean between your teeth, and rinsing with an alcohol-free antimicrobial mouthwash.
